As New York City Democrats Decide How Extreme Left to Go,
a Clarion Call from 1965 – and the Common Sense Right
60th Anniversary of Buckley Announcement for Mayor
STATEMENT FROM CONSERVATIVE PARTY CHAIRMAN GERARD KASSAR
“On the 60th Anniversary of his entrance into the 1965 New York City mayoral race (June 24), New York Democrats would be wise to purchase a copy of Bill Buckley’s enduring municipal classic, “The Unmaking of Mayor”, still in print six decades after Buckley’s iconic, and at times hilarious, foray into New York City politics. It is a book of keen conservative observations and prescriptions, many of which stand today.
“In contrast, we see a field of present-day Democratic Party mayoral candidates bereft of vision — hanging on to catastrophically dumb policies that have failed to work generation after generation — with the very real chance of a Marxist eclipsing them all using some bewildering new voting process that only Democrats could conceive.
“Bill Buckley’s 1965 mayoral run took the common sense ideas being advanced in heartland America by Senator Barry Goldwater and forced them into a national conversation dominated at the time by eastern liberal media outlets. It changed America more than it did New York sadly.
“After 60 years, New York City Democrats have learned nothing. What a tragedy. Maybe they should crack the book. It’s never too late for reason.”
