Repeal the Gas Sales Tax Movement Gains Major Boost

Ft. Hamilton Station, NY -- The Conservative Party initiative to suspend the 4% gasoline sales tax received a major boost today when Senator Carl Marcellino (R/C; 5th S.D.) held a press conference to introduce legislation to eliminate state sales and compensating use taxes on motor fuels and diesel motor fuels (S.5952).

“It is absolutely necessary for the state to respond to the needs of its people and give them immediate relief,” said State Chairman Michael R. Long who attended the press conference at the Huntington Auto Diagnostic Center in Huntington, New York. “Last week the state collected over 10 cents per gallon as gasoline prices soared to almost $3.00 per gallon, this week, with the added problems of oil refineries in the gulf unable to operate as a result of “Katrina” they are talking of $4.00 per gallon which will incur up to 16 cents per gallon just for the sales tax,” said Long.

“Taxpayers need relief from the high prices at the gas pumps and his legislation is poised to give the people of New York some hope that government is responding to their calls for help,” continued Long.

“This proposal is straight forward help for all of the residents in New York, Everyone is impacted by the soaring cost of gasoline, from the small business person to large companies like Federal Express and UPS as well as school districts, nursing homes, hospitals and families struggling to buy school supplies at this time of year. Any proposal to help is welcomed news to those who need it. The dialogue is beginning and government is listening to those who pay the bills,” Long stated.

“The Conservative Party launched a petition drive to suspend the gasoline sales tax on August 17th and the response of the public has been excellent, with the introduction of this legislation we are well on our way to keeping our hard earned money in our pockets,” Long said. “If you have not signed our petition yet, call 718-921-2158 or 518-356-7882 for your copy. Or you can download it from the Conservative Party website. Help us help you to keep more of your own money by signing the petition,” Long concluded.
