Laura Schreiner Conservatives Support Civil Confinement, Increasing Charter Schools While Opposing Legislative Pay Increase Ft. Hamilton Station, NY - “Civil confinement is an absolute necessity for the protection of our children” said State Conservative Chairman Michael R. Long and the members of the Legislature have a moral obligation to protect our youngest citizens. “When the Members return to Albany this week, we urge them to do what is right for our children by passing civil confinement and increasing the number of Charter Schools,” Long stated. We also urge them to be cognizant of the fact that now is not the right time to increase their own pay,” Long continued. The following Legislative Memo was distributed to the Members outlining the Conservative Party position on these matters. Yes on Civil Confinement According to a story in Monday’s New York Post, nearly two-thirds of the sexual predators locked up past their prison sentences have victimized children less than 17 years of age. The average offender served just nine years and seven months while the child who has been traumatized by their decadent behavior lives with it forever. All of the counseling in the world never heals the trauma the child survived, and all of the counseling in the world will never change a sexual predator. Civil confinement is the only answer to keep our children safe. Yes on increasing the number of Charter Schools Currently the statewide waiting list of children seeking to get into charter schools stands at 25,000. Parents want an alternative to public schools that have failed. To be certain, not every public school has failed its students, but in the geographical areas of the state where they have failed, New Yorkers who pay an excessive amount of taxes to fund education, should be afforded the opportunity increase the number of charter schools. Increasing the number of charter schools is in the best interest of our children. No Pay Raise A very wise man said it best “The members of the Legislature should not be bribed into doing what is right.” The members of the Legislature are aware of the salary when they choose to run for office and if the salary for the part time job is insufficient then they should work in the private sector where pay increases are commensurate with production. -30- |
